Theoretically, you don't need a headset for VR, I'm more than sure that using a phone as a camera to capture movements, a computer (but what about without it?) and some special programs from GitHub to make your phone work as a motion capture camera and many other programs for different tasks. You can try to do something similar, the quality of motion capture will be worse, but still quite feasible.
