I suppose it's due to selection bias then, catholics japanese in a south american country. Completely different than shinto or athiest in native japan.

This isnt how religion works in the east. Catholicism is western traditionalism, not eastern, so when you see asians convert to it a lot of the time it's because they are "western weaboos". It's like a white person speaking in japanese vs a japanese person speaking in japanese. Catholic japanese have lower birth rates, more liberal, etc than even athiest japanese due to this reason, where as for westerners it has the reverse effect.
