I often contemplate what a fantasy RPG of our world, made in some alternate reality would look like; you can just imagine the media shit storm that would occur if such a thing was created in our world. Imagine in character creation you could pick your race with strengths and drawbacks. “Africans: +10% heat resistance, -25% Charisma” or something like that. People here might ask “why would anyone want to play as a black man?” Same reason some people like playing an orc barbarian.

I for one can’t help but get whiplash from our culture being so okay with “picking” races in video games even though they’d be uncomfortable in a nonfiction context. Like it’s just silly that it’s more socially acceptable to be devoted to the Bretons in the Elder Scrolls than it is to be devoted to any European culture.
